The work of the Foundation of Agrarian Studies (FAS) in cooperation with Rosa-Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS) helps to understand the agrarian relations in India.  FAS has been undertaking an India-wide programme of village studies, titled the Project on Agrarian Relations in India (PARI). The project involves description, analysis, and the creation of a detailed database on village India in diverse agro-ecological and socio-economic regions of the country. The database is thereby a unique data archive on villages in contemporary India.

FAS has also been actively disseminating information by means of seminars and workshops and to a wider audience through the publications of its research in peer-reviewed academic journals concerned with the subject of agrarian studies. Articles based on the research by the Foundation have been cited in various academic fora and publications. The reports and journals of academic and policy-making bodies of immense importance, including the Indian Society for Agricultural Economics, the Indian Society for Labour Economics, the Reserve Bank of India and the reputed international journal, have referred to the research articles prepared by the Foundation. Articles are also referred to in newspapers and magazines such as The Hindu, The New Indian Express, The Wire, and Down To Earth.

With the support of RLS, FAS is also involved in a scientific assessment of the landscape of digital and AI-based technologies in Indian agriculture with a focus on sustainability, equity, and rural livelihoods along the axes of class, caste and gender. To take stock of the current thinking and scholarship on agrarian change, FAS also organises a conference on Agrarian Change in India.

FAS also organise the Young Scholars’ Online Seminar Series. As part of the series, young scholars working in the field of agrarian studies and socio-economic life in rural regions of South Asia present their work each year.

With support from RLS, this project aims to generate research-driven insights that contribute to more inclusive and sustainable agricultural policies in India and beyond.
